Personal Ethos and Design Philosophy
Aidan is well regarded in the industry for under-promising and over-delivering. He is constantly in search of methods to create sustainable work practices that reduce waste as well as energy consumption.
AIDAN ON MATERIALS
“I believe in using the minimal amount of material to get the maximum effect. I tend to not over decorate an item and yet still create iconic pieces which are of a high sculptural quality. Form must follow function. Durability and feasibility is key. I am passionate about using woods from sustainable sources, but equally am versed in the full spectrum of materials that allows for full creative expression. In my mind, one can disrupt norms, but the materials used together must be an intelligent combination that has both longevity and comfort. Often the pieces tend to be light and stackable, so as to minimize space loss. ”
AIDAN ON INSPIRATION
“I believe in the power of narration. Every piece should tell a story, from the material it is constructed from, to the art of its form to the vocabulary it uses to describe itself. I enjoy having an element of surprise in the designs. Sometimes it is the fusion of two unlikely materials or sometimes it is a hidden shape not seen unless from a certain angle. There is always a sense of context to my pieces. I advocate what I call retro modernity, a simplification of form that comes from the past and yet is reinvented through material. I feel there is a return to furniture which is striking in its modernity and yet still usable as an object within the home or office: these are icons which, although strong in design aesthetic, still are functional. There tends to be a linearity in the form of the pieces I create which are concentrated and have a strong identity within a room-space. Their starkness sets them apart.“
